Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi was established in 1969. JNU is a leading public university which has granted recognition and accreditation to many prestigious institutions across the country. The University has been ranked no. 1 in India by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with 3.91/4 CGP, ranked no. 3 among all the universities in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, Govt. of India in 2016 and no. 2 in 2017. JNU has also been given the Best University Award from the President of India in 2017. It was the first university to offer courses in foreign languages in an integrated five year MA program. The university has collaborations with various universities across the world in research projects, conferences and publications. JNU has many active MoUs with national and international universities. JNU has been given the status of the University of Excellence and its several academic centres have been declared Centres of Excellence by the University Grants Commission UGC.

 

The youngest and a promising school in Jawaharlal Nehru University, School of Engineering, will start its academic sessions from July 2018 with Five-Year Dual Degree Programme (FYDDP) with BTech in Engineering and Master’s (MS/MTech), with specializations in Social Sciences/Humanities/Science/Technology. The thrust areas of the BTech programme will cover most of the well-known disciplines of Sciences and Technology. The courses of this programme will consist of Sciences and Engineering including various options such as Communications, Environment, Electronics and Information Technology. Considering the all-pervasive and universal nature of Technology today which cuts across disciplines, viz. Sciences, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, study of Communications, Environment and Information Technology will have to be brought in consonance with the understanding of various aspects of Economics, Commerce, Sociology, Politics, History and Linguistics. Rigorous data analysis (big data analysis, for example) on various social aspects have strengthened our understanding of social behaviour. The Humanities and Social Sciences no longer operate in isolation.

 

In fact, the recent past has been a witness to numerous interdisciplinary collaborations: Communications with Languages and Linguistics; Environmental Engineering with Geography; Economic Strategies and Commercial Implications with Computing Methods etc. Engineering has thus permeated and also extended extensive support to many aspects of Humanities and Social Sciences. Similarly, the Humanities and Social Sciences have helped the Engineering Sciences to construct models that factor in social behaviour and provide socially relevant solutions to various problem
